Catheter recovery after BPH treatment.

Catheter time after BPH treatment varies by procedure type and patient factors. Here's what published studies report for each approach.

Catheter duration by procedure

Catheter time is one of the most tangible recovery differences between BPH procedures. Shorter catheter time means less discomfort, lower UTI risk, and faster return to normal activity.

Procedure Catheter Time Anesthesia Hospital Stay
Nexusuro (TUCBDP) 2.5-3.3 days (2.5±0.5d) Local + sedation Same-day discharge
UroLift None or overnight Local + sedation Same-day or overnight
Rezūm 1-3 days Sedation / general Same-day or overnight
GreenLight PVP 1-2 days General / spinal 1-2 days
TURP 1-3 days General / spinal 1-3 days

Why a catheter after BPH surgery?

After any BPH procedure that manipulates the prostate, the urethra may swell temporarily. A catheter keeps urine draining freely while swelling subsides. The degree of swelling — and therefore catheter duration — depends on how much tissue trauma the procedure creates.

Mechanical dilation (TUCBDP) uses no thermal energy and leaves no implant — factors that contribute to its favorable safety profile. Published studies report catheter duration of 2.5-3.3 days (Zhang 2022, Wang 2020).

Tips for catheter comfort

  • - Keep the drainage bag below bladder level at all times.
  • - Drink plenty of water — dilute urine reduces irritation.
  • - Secure the catheter tube to your thigh with medical tape to prevent tugging.
  • - Mild bladder spasms are normal. Report persistent pain or cloudy urine to your doctor.
  • - Avoid constipation — straining can irritate the catheter site.

What to expect during catheter removal

Catheter removal is brief — usually under a minute. The balloon anchoring the catheter in the bladder is deflated, then the tube slides out. Most patients describe mild discomfort, not pain. After removal, you may feel some stinging during the first few voids. This typically resolves within 24 hours.
